Case study · Hotel Brauhof Wien

Hotel Brauhof Wien. A stay, in sixty seconds.

The hotel lounge: armchairs and a small chess table under three bright posters and a tall arched window.

A one-minute film for a hotel with its own brewery and beer garden in Vienna’s Fünfhaus — the route a guest takes, from the street to the front desk, the room, breakfast and the meeting rooms, in the order they meet it.

The work

One film, the whole stay.

A hotel is booked on what a guest can picture before they arrive. The film walks the route they will take and stops wherever there is something to see.

  • In the order a guest meets it

The street and the façade, the steps up to reception, the lounge, the corridor, the room and its balcony, the bathroom, breakfast, and the meeting rooms under the vaults.

  • Details between the rooms

A lamp from below, an old wall fountain, bread cut on a board. The shots that make it this hotel rather than any hotel.

  • Ends on the name

The last shot is the card — hotel, brewery, beer garden — so the film finishes on what to search for.

The film

The route, cut by cut.

Eleven places and a closing card. The strip under the picture is every shot at its length, as the detector found them; the chapters below are the places, and each one plays from where it starts.

  • Long where there is room

The room runs nearly nine seconds over four shots and breakfast nearly fifteen over seven — the places a guest spends time get the time.

  • Short where there is a detail

The shortest shots are under a second: the façade sign between the room and the balcony, a sink, the breakfast buffet.

  • No black in the frame

The grade lifts the shadows. In the frames below, nothing reaches black — the darkest tones stop above it, and the picture stays soft and warm.

The light

Warm, and never black.

Three frames from the film, their tones from black to white, read from the file. Each chart starts right of its left edge: the darkest thing in the picture is a dark grey.

Frames from the film

Mean brightness 28 to 40 %. Low and warm, like the rooms at night — with the lamps as the highlights.
