Case study · WinterWatch

WinterWatch. Long-form that reached 2.5 million views.

WinterWatch is a YouTube channel about Game of Thrones and its world. The work was the whole of the long-form video: the topic and its promise, the structure of the story, and the edit itself, delivered ready to publish — twenty to seventy minutes at a time.

Titles, views, runtimes, dates and chapters are read from YouTube on 23 September 2026 and can be checked there. The baseline is the one figure that cannot: it is an estimate from memory, and every place it appears says so.

The brief

Build the story, not assemble the clips.

The channel needed its videos made from the story outward: what the video promises, how it unfolds, and an edit that keeps a viewer for the length of it. The work covered the channel’s recurring formats.

  • 32:41

    Character

Deep-dive profiles of one person, told through their moments.

e.g. Every Time Tyrion Outsmarted Everyone

  • 1:12:22

    History

Timelines that put a whole world in order.

e.g. The COMPLETE History of Game Of Thrones

  • 57:22

    Relationships

Family trees and connections, explained so they stay explained.

e.g. How EVERY Targaryen Is Related (Entire Family Tree Explained)

  • 21:49

    Lists

Ranked narratives, where each entry is its own short story.

e.g. Every Person Who Deserved To Die In Game Of Thrones

The value of the edit

A benchmark, and what the edit reached.

In the project period a video typically drew somewhere around five to ten thousand views. The best-performing video now shows 2.5 million. The first figure is remembered, not measured; the second is on YouTube.

What changed

From a raw story to a watchable long-form.

Four things the edit did on every video, whatever its format and however long it ran.

  1. Content direction

Topics shaped into repeatable formats, each with a clear promise to the viewer.

  2. Narrative architecture

Long stories built on progression, reveals, context and payoff — not a sequence of clips.

  3. Scene-driven editing

Footage chosen and ordered to carry the story, the emotion and the context at once.

  4. Long-form rhythm

Density of information, visual change and momentum managed across the whole runtime.

The deliverable wasn’t a video

It was a repeatable long-form content product, built for YouTube.

The hero video

Twenty-one minutes, forty-nine seconds.

The channel’s most-watched video, laid out along its own runtime: nine chapters, as the uploader marked them, each opening on the frame YouTube shows for it.

The runtime to scale: eight entries after a ten-second opening, each between 1:52 and 3:44 long — a ranked list told as eight short stories of even weight.

Not a one-off

The result wasn’t a one-off.

Five public videos from the channel, by views. Four formats, twenty minutes to seventy-two, and none of them under half a million.

The outcome

The case in one frame.

Five videos, 5.46 million public views between them, and one that passed 2.5 million on its own.
